The iPhone 4S sales launch in Bejing has left Apple with egg on its face. Almost 2000 people gathered outside the company's Bejing store the night before the expected launch, and then were told the sale of new phones would be postponed. Hundreds in the crowd were reportedly hired by scalpers looking to make a profit by buying the phones and reselling them in other areas at an inflated cost. Things quickly got ugly after the announcement. Though the crowd dwindled to about 350 people after word spread that the store wouldn't open as planned the remaining mob erupted, shouting at employees and even throwing eggs before being dispersed by police. Customers will be able to buy the phones through Apple's online store and from local carrier China Unicom, but a spokesperson for the company said the phone would be unavailable in Beijing or Shanghai stores for the time being. Ahh, capitalism! |
