It now shows in this study of over 800 pancreatic cancer patients that the average age of heavy smokers diagnosed was 62 years old, and those that were heavy drinkers were on average around 61 years old, which is 10 years earlier than the typical age of an average diagnosis. Smokers who were defined as “heavy smokers” were those who smoked, on average, one pack of cigarettes per day;”heavy drinkers” were people who, on average, drank up to three drinks per day.
The study found that those who drank beer were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier than people who drank other kinds of alcohol, such as liquors or wine. But after the amount consumed was taken into account, researchers realized that the type of alcohol did not affect the person’s age at the time of diagnosis.
It is possible that the harmful effects of heavy smoking and drinking can be reversed, which is good news for most people.
After just ten years after giving up the unhealthy habits, ex-smokers and drinkers showed no sign of increased risks of being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at a younger age. The study was published online Aug. 28 in the American Journal of Gastroenterology.
Dr. Michelle Anderson, lead study author and gastroenterologist, and assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan Health System stated, “As screening programs are developed, an understanding of how personal features influence the age of presentation will be important to optimize the timing of those screenings.” Despite the fact that the study found links between heavy drinking, smoking, and pancreatic cancer diagnosis in earlier ages, it does not corroborate cause-and-effect relationships.
