Capacity additions planned for major North American producers; while population growth and economic development in Asian countries expands demand for polyethylene

According to a new IHS Chemical (NYSE: IHS) study, an abundant supply of inexpensive natural gas-based feedstocks coming from the continent’s highly productive shale plays is revitalizing the polyethylene (PE) industry. As a result, North American producers of PE resins, which comprise the world’s largest category of plastics, are establishing a competitive advantage in a highly competitive global market and that advantage is expected to continue throughout the 2012 to 2017 study period.
