If your Apple keyboard doesn’t work when you connect it to a display

The Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad might not recognize keystrokes or wake your computer. This can happen if you connect your keyboard using USB to a Thunderbolt display. Additionally, devices you connect through the keyboard (such as a mouse) also aren't recognized.
